The homeowners of this residence in Newburyport’s South End were looking to create a Beacon Hill-like courtyard garden in which to relax and entertain. The constraints of the site included its size, the proximity to neighbors, and topography. A large shed also required siting, further constraining the size of the lot. A short stone wall provides overflow seating while also enhancing the height of plantings and structures to increase the buffer to the rear neighbor. Large broadleaved evergreens further enhance privacy, while beautiful specimen stewartias welcome visitors at the front granite and cedar gate.
