KDTurner Design and Sue Brown Design Collaborative worked with the Back of the Hill CDC to develop a plan that utilizes this vacant lot and recaptures it as a valuable amenity for this Roxbury community. Through a series of community meetings, a program for the park was developed which includes passive recreational space for the local community, wildlife habitat, and performance space for the neighboring schools. A series of arcs were developed that weave through the meadow and are punctuated by rustic granite benches. A fieldstone wall defines one of the arcs and allows for topography to be leveled, creating a circular performance space above. The perimeter of the park is surrounded by black metal fencing and granite columns, grounding the park in its New England locale. Plantings that attract birds and butterflies complete the design and allow children and adults alike to enjoy a bit of nature in this dense urban setting.
